Smithsonian Institution Hall of Mammals, National Museum of Natural History
Washington, DC
History meets technology in this award-winning restoration project and state-of-the-art exhibit design for the Hall of Mammals. HSMM provided planning, design, and construction phase services to the Smithsonian Institution for the historic restoration of the West Hall that will serve as a model for future restoration efforts at the museum. Working from archival drawings, photographic documentation, and research of original finishes, HSMM designed a thorough and accurate restoration of the entire Hall.

HSMM also was involved in the design of the new exhibit and worked closely with the exhibit designer to coordinate the hall renovation and building system design with the unique power, HVAC, and lighting needs of the exhibit. The mechanical system is designed to accommodate the large cooling load generated by exhibit lighting and associated dimming panels. Specialized lighting control systems simulate the special conditions dictated by exhibit themes.
The Mammals Hall restoration project received the 2004 Award of Excellence from the DC Chapter, American Institute of Architects. |
