National Gallery of Art
Washington, DC
The National Gallery of Art (NGA) in Washington, DC is a world-renowned museum with an invaluable collection of paintings, sculpture, photographs, decorative, and other fine art items.
HSMM conducted extensive field investigations of all gallery spaces and systems. Detailed engineering and life-cycle studies of alternative replacement systems were prepared. HSMM also is providing architectural support to the Gallery’s design team, including the design of the new Sculpture Gallery. HSMM’s design included converting raw building areas into an intricate ensemble of gallery spaces, complimenting the existing flow of space within the National Gallery of Art.

Among the many renovation challenges HSMM faced, one of the most unique was to provide fire protection systems that would not damage art upon activation. In certain areas of the museum, a state-of-the-art high-pressure (600 psig) water mist system is being applied, which suppresses fire with a fraction of the water required by a standard sprinkler system. |
