R.R. Donnelley & Sons, Inc. Printing Plant

R.R. Donnelley is the largest commercial printing company in the world. When the company decided to build a new four-color book printing plant in Roanoke County, they selected a design-build team to deliver the project on an accelerated schedule. HSMM provided architectural and engineering services for the new 300,000 SF complex, which houses printing and administrative functions.

The printing plant is designed as a once-through operation with raw materials received at one end of the process and palletized finished product shipped out at the other. Key areas of the plant include roll storage/receiving, platemaking, press, print roll hub, binding, shipping, and production core and team spaces. The administrative area houses offices, a cafeteria, conference rooms and medical treatment room.
HSMM worked closely with the design-builder, the client, and the process equipment suppliers and completed the design on an accelerated schedule so that the facility could be up and running within 11 months of contract award. |
