U.S. Penitentiary and Federal Prison Camp
Federal Bureau of Prisons, Lee County, VA
The federal prison in Lee County is an 830,000 SF complex that includes a high-security U.S. Penitentiary, a Minimum-Security Camp, central shared facilities, and UNICOR factory facility and warehouse. Altogether, the prison complex incorporates housing for 960 high security and 128 low security inmates, administration, education, health services, recreation and visitation facilities, food and laundry services, manufacturing facility, storage and warehousing and central plant. The HSMM team provided complete design services for the project, as well as full-time site representation during construction.

Located on the side of a mountain, the project site dropped 400 vertical feet and presented a number of challenges for the design team. Wetlands, sinkholes, and caverns were discovered during the site investigation and assessment process, as were archaeologically significant ruins and two endangered species. HSMM used a multidiscipline team of geologists, geotechnical engineers, environmental engineers, archaeologists, and environmental scientists to address each of these issues during design. |
