Pocotaligo Wastewater Treatment Plant
Sumter, SC
The City of Sumter needed to expand the Pocotaligo Wastewater Treatment Plant and commissioned HSMM to prepare a preliminary engineering report and provide follow-on design services for the upgrade. The report projected capacity requirements, evaluated existing facilities, developed alternative plant upgrades, and evaluated alternatives based on cost, environmental impacts, and other factors. The HSMM team designed the recommended alternative, which involved upgrading the plant's pump station, aeration basins and clarifiers. Variable speed controls, a fine bubble diffused aeration system, and secondary clarifiers were added to the system, improving performance and reducing energy consumption. With these new upgrades, plant capacity was increased from 12 to 15 MGD.

A key project element was a new biosolids drying and pelletizing system. The dried biosolids comply with the most stringent EPA quality standards and are disposed of by land application. The Biosolids Processing Facility received an Engineering Excellence Award from the Consulting Engineers of South Carolina. |
