Pee Dee Wastewater Treatment Plant
Rockingham, NC
HSMM designed the expansion of the Pee Dee Wastewater Treatment Plant to 9 MGD capacity. Plant improvements increased clarifier capacity, improved sludge pumping, and provided chlorination facilities. Sludge handling improvements included aerobic sludge digestion, sludge dewatering using belt filter presses, and a static pile composting system.
HSMM also provided civil engineering services for improvements to the collection system, including 3,800 lf of 12" gravity sewer; 14,320 lf of 16" force main; a 2,000 gpm pump station; 5,000 lf of 15" gravity sewer; and 7,400 lf of 8" force main. HSMM also designed a 5-mile-long 30-inch pipeline that discharges treated plant effluent to the Pee Dee River.
The plant's composting facility received two awards from the EPA -- a 1st Place Award in EPA Region IV for Beneficial Use of Biosolids and 2nd Place Award in EPA's national competition for Clean Water Act Recognition Award for Biosolids Exemplary Management.
