West Georgetown Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant
Georgetown, SC
The City of Georgetown selected HSMM to provide design and construction phase services for a regional plant that would consolidate wastewater collection and treatment for 3 jurisdictions in west Georgetown County. HSMM upgraded and expanded the city's existing 4.5 MGD multi-cell aerated lagoon treatment system to a 12 MGD sequential batch reactor (SBR) activated sludge system, one of the largest in the nation. The project was completed on time, on budget and without disrupting service to any of the localities.

The treatment system included mechanical bar screens, aerated grit chambers, influent flow monitoring, and receiving station. Three existing plant lagoons were converted to a SBR basin with aeration, mixing, and decanting equipment controlled by programmable logic computers. Treated effluent is discharged to the nearby Sampit River, but in 3-hour increments. HSMM designed a 72 MGD pumping station and a mile-long 54" outfall pipe to meet the unique discharge requirements. The project received an Engineering Excellence Award from ACEC, South Carolina. |
