Water Treatment Plant Expansion
City of Hickory, NC
The City of Hickory is a growing community in western North Carolina. When the City needed to increase the capacity of the municipal treatment plant, they turned to HSMM. The expansion was significant, involving doubling the plant's capacity from 16 mgd to 32 mgd. HSMM designed a series of plant improvements, including a 4.0 mgd clearwell, high service pump station, two 8 mgd pumps to the raw water pump station, flocculation basins, three new sedimentation basins, new and upgraded filters, and a filter belt press for alum sludge dewatering. The plant features a continuous sludge withdrawal system using the Trac-Vac system. A new computer system provides automatic backwash and data acquisition.

HSMM's design of the raw water intake structure included two 42-inch pipelines in Lake Hickory. The screens are cleaned by an air burst system. HSMM also designed upgrades to the water distribution system that included 30-inch, 20-inch, and 12-inch line.
The treatment plant received an Honor Award from the Consulting Engineers of South Carolina. |
