Smith Gap Landfill Expansion
Roanoke County, VA
HSMM provided design, permitting, construction administration, and construction quality assurance services for Phases II, III and IV of the Smith Gap Landfill, encompassing approximately 21 acres. Phase II features included leachate piping, earthen phase berms and cell berms, soil liner, HDPE synthetic liner, stone aggregate leachate collection and drainage, geonet/geotextile drainage, and stormwater piping system to drain each cell individually.

HSMM also provided comprehensive services for the follow-on development of Phases III and IV of the landfill. Earlier phases used a composite liner of HDPE and compacted clay. The clay was produced by mining and crushing on-site shale materials and thus avoided the expense of bentonite augmentation. For Phase III-IV, HSMM proposed an alternate liner system design that yielded significant construction cost savings for the County. |
