Relocation of Old Graves Mill Road
Lynchburg, VA
Old Graves Mill Road is an urban collector that serves as a major connection between US Route 460 Business and Graves Mill Road. The road serves existing residential neighborhoods, commercial sites, and industrial parks on the west side of Lynchburg.
The relocation of Old Graves Mill Road will provide relief to the existing intersection with Graves Mill Road by introducing an additional signalized access along the corridor. The new intersection will allow the main flow of traffic to make a direct connection to Graves Mill Road without traveling through an existing commercial/industrial development area.
HSMM performed transportation planning, alternatives analysis, environmental review, and design services for the road improvements. Major work components performed for the City of Lynchburg included:
- Transportation planning and alternatives analysis of multiple alternatives that incorporated traffic on Old Graves Mill Road, Graves Mill Road, and Mill Ridge Road.
- Coordination and design of a joint use stormwater management facility for the City and Scott Insurance.
- Widening of Graves Mill Road to accommodate a new full movement signalized intersection with Old Graves Mill Road without impacting Tomahawk Creek.
- Utilities coordination for power, telephone, natural gas, cable television, and water distribution lines.
- Preparation of a detailed sequence of construction/ maintenance of traffic plan was developed to minimize the overall impact to the traveling public.
Currently HSMM is providing construction assistance to the City of Lynchburg on an as needed basis.
