Brownfield Assessment and Restoration
Norfolk Southern Railway Company, Princeton, WV

HSMM provided environmental consulting services to Norfolk Southern Railway Company (NSRC) at its Former Princeton Roadway Shop in Princeton, West Virginia.  The 60-acre tract of land houses former railroad maintenance shops and support facilities.

HSMM entered the facility into the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) Voluntary Remediation Program (VRP) to facilitate redevelopment of the property for other commercial/industrial uses.

A site-wide assessment was performed to quantify impacts associated with former maintenance operations.  Human health and ecological risk assessments were performed to determine the level of corrective action required at the site.  Risk to human health was adequately controlled by restricting land use on the property and by implementing engineering controls (i.e. covering areas of impacted soil with pavement, building foundations, and/or gravel cover).

HSMM worked closely with NSRC, local development groups, and state regulators to assure that needs of the various stakeholders were met.  This coordination allowed work to focus on areas that could be easily readied for redevelopment while environmental work continued in more complex areas.

HSMM completed an expedited closure of a 13-acre parcel subdivided from the facility to provide an alternate location to a local industry that was considering relocation of its operation outside of the state.
