Walter Reed Hospital Roof Garden

HSMM’s therapeutic garden design team developed a healing garden for the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. The garden terrace is an extension of the hospital and was designed to introduce an exterior environment that is therapeutic compared to the uncomfortable sights, sounds, smells and textures of a many hospital interiors.

Elements such as raised water gardens allow children and patients in wheelchairs to access and experience a therapeutic environment with all five senses. Flowering plants, herb gardens, shaded seating areas and paving materials were chosen to help facilitate the healing process by reducing stress and providing comfort and security for the users.
