Landfill Environmental Monitoring

HSMM has provided design, monitoring, and analytical services for environmental compliance, including monitoring of groundwater, landfill gas, and stormwater, for the Rockingham County Landfill.

Groundwater monitoring is performed in accordance with Virginia Solid Waste Management Regulation (VSWMR) requirements.  Groundwater monitoring has included installation of monitoring wells, dedicated sampling equipment, semiannual sampling and analysis, evaluation of groundwater flow, and statistical analysis of groundwater data.  HSMM added additional wells to the groundwater monitoring network in response to statistically significant detections of some constituents.

Landfill gas monitoring has included installation of 33 triple-probe wells around the perimeter of the facility.  HSMM prepared a Gas Remediation Plan and, subsequently, designed, pilot-tested, permitted, and administered construction of an active landfill gas extraction system.

Stormwater permitting activities included preparation of a pollution prevention plan, which documents policies including materials management, erosion and sediment control, and procedures for compliance sampling and monitoring of runoff flows and pollutant quantities.
