HSMM conducted all design meetings with the owner and users of the facility and coordinated design issues with our team of subconsultants. The contract documents were prepared to meet Naval Air Systems Command, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, and United Facilities Criteria requirements. In addition, stormwater management, and erosion and sediment control plans were prepared to meet the requirements of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. Finally, HSMM worked with the owner and end users to develop detailed construction phasing and construction sequencing plans.

Under an IDIQ contract, HSMM was tasked with designing 100,000 square meters of concrete vehicle parking aprons and taxiways to support the HMX-1 presidential and supporting helicopters, and C-130 and C-17 fixed winged aircraft at Marine Corps Air Facility (MCAF), Quantico, Virginia.

HSMM began the design process in February 2005 and completed design in November 2005, on schedule. This project is currently in the bidding phase and HSMM is working closely with the owner to ensure all requests for information and answered in a timely manner. This project is scheduled for completion in September 2007.

Quality of Design

HSMM created design and construction documents for two new aircraft aprons (300ft x 1000ft and 300ft x 1600ft) for MCAF Quantico. The project also included designing 75-foot-wide taxiways to support current and future operations.

HSMM engineers were responsible for designing the airfield pavements layout and thickness and the site infrastructure and utilities necessary for airfield operations. HSMM’s engineers designed a number of supporting elements, such as fuel truck parking facilities, storm sewers, sanitary sewers, an aircraft wash facility, water supply, electrical supply, airfield lighting, stormwater management, and erosion and sediment control.
