Corrective Action Implementation
Norfolk Southern Railway Company, Bramwell, WV
Norfolk Southern Railway Company (NSRC) detected petroleum impacts to groundwater and soil on its former lease property in Bramwell, West Virginia. Releases occurred due to operation of a service station on the site by a former lessee. In addition, several off-site sources of petroleum impact were identified that complicated the assessment process.
NSRC subsequently agreed to donate the site to the Town of Bramwell upon completion of corrective action. HSMM was contracted to prepare a Corrective Action Plan to address petroleum impacts on the site. As part of corrective action, HSMM coordinated installation and operation of a groundwater remediation system and performed quarterly groundwater monitoring and reporting to the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP).
HSMM worked with the Town of Bramwell and adjacent property owners to enter the former lease property into the WVDEP Voluntary Remediation Program (VRP). The VRP will facilitate site closure by allowing land use controls as part of the final closure study. This will expedite the closure process for NSRC and allow new development opportunities for the Town of Bramwell.
