Butterfly House, National Museum of Natural History
Washington, DC
The new Butterfly House at the National Museum of Natural History will be an exciting and educational visitor experience. It is the Museum’s desire to entertain using spectacle, performance, and the exotic, while delivering distinctive educational and scientific messages. This project introduces and reinforces concepts presented elsewhere in the Museum and strengthens the overall educational messages of the exhibit.

HSMM designed this new Butterfly House to be opened as a permanent exhibit in the Museum’s Hall 30. The exhibit is located on the second floor of the museum, and includes a tropically-tempered, fully enclosed House that does not engage the existing building structure except for necessary floor attachments. HSMM’s designs also include space for a butterfly exhibit outside the House, an electrical room, a plant staging room, a Butterfly Shop, and office space for managerial staff. |
