Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital Consolidation
Roanoke, VA
HSMM designed the 300,000 SF expansion and 150,000 SF renovation of the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital (CRMH), as they combined services and locations with their sister hospital Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital. As the only tertiary-care hospital in southwest Virginia, CRMH remained fully operational throughout construction.
New areas of the hospital include a five-story vertical addition to the South Tower, which houses the newly arrived women’s and children’s services, including the region’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The hospital Emergency Department was also significantly expanded with a renovated waiting area and entrance. To support the added services, a new Powerhouse was constructed. New Operating Rooms and food service preparation, dining and serving areas were also added. A new Outpatient Entrance at the northern edge of the hospital provides easy access for patients and visitors on this constrained, vertical site.

Visual interior branding themes draw from the expansive views of the Roanoke Valley that patients and hospital employees see from the building’s windows. The Pediatric Unit showcases star themes in a floor pattern of mountains and valleys, reflecting Mill Mountain and a regional attraction, the Mill Mountain Star. The Labor, Delivery, and Recovery floors mimic the calming undulations of the nearby Roanoke River in varied wood grain.
The Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital Consolidation won a Merit Award in the Renovation Category, Mid-Atlantic Construction’s Best of 2007 Awards, and (Building Design & Construction). |
