Joint Strike Fighter Test & Support Facility Patuxent River Naval Air Station, MD
The Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) project for the Patuxent River Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division provides a new testing and support facility for the military’s newest fighter jet – the F-35. The new F-35 Joint Strike Fighter is a low-observable stealth airplane designed to combine supersonic speeds with stealth technology to avoid enemy radar. On this $25 million design-build project, HSMM provided designs for two new buildings (Buildings One & Two) and upgrades to Hazelrigg Hangar (Building 2133), as well as new 270 volt DC power distribution provided at 10 locations in the hangar bay, and demolition of 7 existing buildings. Building One is a multi-story research and development engineering office and lab. Building Two serves both as a high-bay engine maintenance area (with full coverage bridge crane) and an engineering facility.
